8vo (173 x 101 mm), three vols. Bookplate of R. McNeil to upper pastedown. Bound in contemporary calf, sometime rebacked.

The Second Edition of Thomas Percy's Reliques of Ancient English Poetry, which was first published in London in 1765. It was a collection of British lyric poetry. This work was important because it captured the British imagination and cemented its poetic identity as a nation.

This particular copy is notable for its fabulous, albeit slightly creepy, twentieth-century bookplate (present in each of the three volumes), which depicts the devil chiseling a message onto a gravestone: "In Memory of R. McNeil". If you know who "R. McNeil is, please get in touch-- we would love to know, so we can include that information in this description!
