Moore, Thomas. The Poetical Works of Thomas Moore, Collected by Himself. Complete in one volume. Philadelphia: Lippincott, Grambo & Co. 1854.

8vo (157 x 105mm), pp. 517, [1], with engraved frontispiece and title-page. Bound in contemporary roan rebacked in cloth, with original gilt lettering-piece to spine. Pencil inscription to rear endpaper, pen to front endpaper, ms. note enclosed.

A nicely produced edition of Moore's poetry, with wonderful engraved frontispiece and title-page. This copy is notable for the sweet pencil inscription in the rear of the book: "To Wallis(?) M. Keif Limerick, Maine Present from Horace Dec. 1866." A nice example of Victorian gift-giving between friends at Christmas-time. It also has a (now faded) early ink inscription on the front free endpaper: "Hattie, We'll often think of him that's gone [?] Limerick Dec 3. 1866".

To make it even more special, this copy has a charming manuscript note tucked into the front that implore borrowers of the book to return it in good order to its rightful owner:

"This
Book Belongs
To
Nellie M. Tufts

If thou art borrowed by a friend
Right-[?] shall he be
To read, to study, not to lend.
But to return to me.

Not that impar[?]ed knowledge doth
Diminish wisdom's store
But looks I find if often lent
Return to me no more.

Read slowly, pause frequently,
Think Seriously, return duly. With
The corners of the leaves all
Straight and clean.

Alas. [?] for it was
borrowed. 2 Kings. 6e. 5v."

A curious book, with many human ties and traces.
