Photograph, gelatin silver print. This image taken in 1968 shows three young girls walking down a sidewalk in the Bronx with their long shadows stretching out before them. This image
captures what inspires Cowans as a photographer: “For me, it’s always about the
image, no matter what you’re using.... it’s all about the emotion in the photograph
or painting or whatever. Capturing those feelings that come through you—if you’re
honest and true, it translates so that other people can feel them. It’s not so much the
technique as how much emotion you get into it.”
