This work is a valuable source of historical scholarship on the history of North Madison, whose history occasionally becomes overshadowed by larger, more established towns in the area, such as Guilford. Cleaver starts his narrative from the very beginning of time, noting archaeological findings of pottery fragments and charred animal bones left behind by the Hammonasett people. He describes the area during its time as part of "East Guilford" in the 1700s, and its evolution into what we call "North Madison" today. Cleaver's writing is highly readable, and focuses largely on the topography and the people of North Madison, paying tribute to the natural beauty of the area and its origins.

Below are just a few of the useful resources Cleaver includes:
1. A condensed family tree for the Hill dynasty in Guilford;
2. A host of maps from 1800s, including a district map and geological survey;
3. Tax lists;
4. A list of the first permanent European settlers;
5. And photocopied census information.
