A smoking cap (also known as a lounge cap) made of dark brown velvet (probably silk). The outside is embordered with red thread and the inner lining is made of a thin cotton. A tassel or sidepiece hangs to the side and is made of thin silk or cotton. Possibly made by Robert J. Godwin in 1860. Worn to prevent the wearers (usually male) hair from smelling like smoke. In addition, smoking caps were usually handmade by women for men, as the social more of the time dictated that smoking should not be done in their presence. Worn in conjunction with a smoking coat and in the wearers private home. Popular between 1840 and 1880.
