Velvet

Brown velvet bonnet with tan silk brocade ribbon. Brim of hat is 6 1/2" deep at top, and 25" from side to side. Crown has a a 2 1/4 " brown velvet ruffle, as does back of neck. A decorative bavolette ruffle appears at crown and back. Ribbon goes across the crown in 2 places and around back above neck ruffle. Rear ribbon has a 7" wide bow with 7" tails. Front ribbon ties under the chin. Front brim of hat is frayed. Interior has stiff woven lining and a second partial lining of net. Both in good condition. Chin ribbon as been reattached with a straight pin, left in place. Based on the lines and scale of this bonnet it has either been imported from France or made from a French pattern. Circa 1830s.
