Darius Gray House - 286 Sharon Mt. Road. Owned in 2010 by William and Virginia Cowie

Letter from Frank Spencer to Evelyn Hamlin (2/25/1968) about Darius Gray House.

[NOTE:  A copy of this letter (with same number) is also in the file on the Peck House - 270 Sharon Mt. Road.]

Body of letter reads:
"Charles Huntting had asked me about the history of the mountain house.  My recollections of what my father told me, and some old notes which he had made, did not seem to be the entire story - hence my phone call today.  Please don't go to the trouble of researching, I just wondered what you might remember of the facts.
My father said that his house (which I will call the Gray house) was first built in 1776, prior to that time that your bigger house was built on the road.  I don't know where he got the 1776 date.  Some notes of his mention that the first land that Darius Gray bought was 1778, which seems to conflict with 1776.
His notes mention that your mother told him that there was another house, south east of the Gray house and close to it.  The foundations were filled in many years ago.  Did Calvin Peck live there?
He said that Augustus Peck lived in the house in about 1828 and that Silas Gray, Darius' son had sold the entire property to Enoch (Augustus' father?) in 1817.  I take it that Calvin Peck was Enoch's father.
There were also Jonathan, Abner, and Samuel Peck mentioned in various Sharon histories.  Wer they relatives of your family?
I noticed the A.L. Peck lived in the house according to the Sharon maps of 1853 and 1874.  Was this Augustus?
I take it that Charles W. Peck was Enoch's son and your grandfather?
I don't think I ever heard my father say whom Darius Gray bought the property from originally.  Do you know?  I noticed that there was a John Gray who settled in the valley in 1743.  Do you know if this is a relative of Darius?
Was Cornelius Hamlin an ancestor of yours?
If I can put the history together, I would like to write it up and put it in the Historical Society records as well as to give Charles Huntting a copy."
