"An American flintlock pistol, caliber 54, haevy and substantial with excellent workmanship. It is dated 1842 and is US Military Model 1836. By then, percussion cups displaced flints: as usual, the military were the last to change over. So this pistol was out of date when made. Maker was R. Johnson, Middlebury, CT, and old time factory about to change ownership and churning out the last of the Flint Locks for the UD Military. It is a rare piece, complete and in fine condition. Appraisal $300.00" The left barrel is engraved by flintlock. Reference: Admiral Thomas C. Hart report: "The Arms Collection". Given in 1911 by David H. Houghtaling . Deed of gift actually made in 1952. See 1952 accessions file - these items really should have a tri-partite number.
