This polished beaver hat has a 6" crown, wrapped with a 4" band of black silk which is pinned on with small straight pins. The hat's circumference is 24 1/4". The top of the crown is 7 1/4" in diameter and the brim is 3 3/8" wide. The sweat band is of leather and is 2 1/2" wide. Printed on the silk lining (black stripes about 3/8" wide alternating with plain and twill stripes) is "Pinaud/ 7/Richelieu/ Paris". The crown is lined with black net over cardboard. Early 19th century.
Very poor condition. Sweat band is worn through in places and unstitched. Brim was torn and stitched together.
Belonged to great, great grandfather of Joseph Buckley (1792 - 1861).
