Copy of a likeness taken of Corporal David C. Roberts of Madison, Connecticut.
Roberts enlisted as a private in Company I of the Connecticut Volunteers 12th Regiment on December 6, 1861. Following the expiry of his three-year term of service, Roberts re-enlisted on January 1, 1864, before being promoted to Corporal on May 20. He was later injured on October 19 during the Battle of Cedar Creek, an important Union victory. Roberts was then transferred to Company C of the Twelfth Battalion Infantry on November 26, 1864.
