Five-hundred seven page book, 6.25" x 9.75", titled The History of the Civil War in America; Comprising a Full and Impartial Account of the Origin and Progress of the Rebellion, of the Various Naval and Military Engagements, of the Heroic Deeds Performed by Armies and Individuals, and of Touching Scenes in the Field, the Camp, the Hospital, and the Cabin ... Vol. 1. Written by John S.C. Abbott and published in 1863 (notably, prior to the war's conclusion) by Henry Bill of New York. The book consists of a thorough account of the origins and progress of the Civil War through the campaign and death of Brigadier General Ormsby M. Mitchel in October of 1862. An entire chapter is devoted to the Merrimac and the Monitor, in which frequent mention is made of Cornelius Scranton Bushnell. 

There are a number of steel engravings of battle scenes and "portraits of distinguished men" (primarily politicians and military figures). There is a handwritten note referencing "C.S. Bushnell" on one of the first pages and a handwritten signature on the final page.
