Naomi Tucker Tillman Artis was interviewed by Maxine Watts on February 18, 1998 for the African American Oral History Project. Artis speaks about how her family migrated to Waterbury from North Carolina, how her father was caster at the Chase Manufacturing Waterville plant, how her mother was a dressmaker, community events at the Pearl Street Neighborhood House, and how she taught music in the public schools during the 1950s until switching to teaching elementary school. Naomi Tucker Tillman Artis was the first African American woman appointed to teach in the Waterbury public school system.
