Horace Chauncey Johnson (1820-1890) was the preëminent Waterbury portrait painter of his day and stood at the center of Waterbury's art world. This photograph depicts his art studio with his paintings hanging on the wall, leaning on the floor, and one ready to be worked on in an easel. A small table to the right of the easel has a palette and quite a few bottles on top of it.
