Likely Waterbury Detective Camera

circa 1895
Wood, Glass, Leather, Brass, Paper
This object is a wooden box camera with a leather handle. This camera was likely manufactured by Scovill Manufacturing Company in Waterbury, CT during the later part of the nineteenth century. This model is most likely a later Waterbury Detective Camera based on it's size, finishings, and research conducted by the curatorial department. Advertised for its discretion in taking photographs, the Detective Camera was used by private detectives as well as artists and everyday people. One of the draws of this camera was that there was no need for a tripod.
