Letters - Philip Platt, Madison Historical Society, and Southern HBCUs

circa February 1970
Responses from Talladega, Tougaloo, Huston-Tillotson colleges, and Dillard University (from Alabama, Mississippi, Texas, and Louisiana) to an inquiry by Philip Platt. The letters indicate that the schools do not have any information about Daniel Hand (1801-1891). Hand was a philanthropist from Madison who donated his fortune to the American Missionary Association, a group dedicated to securing education for African Americans. The listed schools are Historically Black Colleges and Universities that receive funding from the American Missionary Association.
