The letters indicate that the schools do not have any information about Daniel Hand (1801-1891). Hand was a philanthropist from Madison who donated his fortune to the American Missionary Association, a group dedicated to securing education for African Americans. The listed schools are Historically Black Colleges and Universities that receive funding from the American Missionary Association.
