Article - "U.S. Rationalized Slavery and Produced Racism" by Henry N. Drewry

circa 2000

An article by Henry N. Drewry, a professor at Princeton University, that traces arguments that justified slavery throughout American History. The text, U.S. Rationalized Slavery and Produced Racism, was printed in a Princeton University publication.

Drewry obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from Talladega College, one of the colleges supported by the Daniel Hand Fund in the American Missionary Association. Daniel Hand (1801-1891) was a Madison boy who became a successful entrepreneur in the South. He dedicated his fortune to philanthropy, setting much of it aside for scholarships for African Americans.

The article traces the idea of ethnic supremacy and the paternalist ethos from 1619. Drewy notes how the philosophies developed in response to changes in the demand for slave labor, changes in the attitudes towards enslaved Africans, and the formation of a uniquely African American identity.
