Ribbon medallion badge for the Wadhams GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) Post no. 49. GAR was a fraternal organization of Civil War veterans. Post no. 49 was the post for Waterbury, Connecticut.
The metal pin bar, with a brooch pin fastening, reads "Wadhams G.A.R Post no. 49" in raised lettering and has a decorative scroll border. A red, white, and blue silk ribbon hangs down from the pin bar with "Associate" stamped in gold lettering. A circular metal medallion dangles from the ribbon, with an image of a soldier in relief standing in front of a landscape. Raised writing around the border of the medallion reads "We stand by our country's defenders. 1861-1865". On the back of the medallion is a quote from Abraham Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address in raised writing: "Care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphans".
