Metal, gold plated badge pin. The pin bar, with a brooch pin fastening, reads "Souvenir" in raised writing and is surrounded by decorative scrolls and a sun burst motif. Hanging from the pin bar is a star-shaped pendant. A circular central image in raised relief has the Goddess of Liberty in the center, representing loyalty, with a soldier and a sailor on either side clasping hands to represent fraternity.  Two children kneel in front of the Goddess of Liberty to receive a benediction and the assurance of protection from comrades (a symbol of charity.) On either side are a flag and an eagle representing freedom and an ax and a bundle of rods representing union. Raised writing frames the central image: "40th Nat'l Encampment / Minneapolis / Grand Army of the Republic / 1861 - Veteran - 1866" In the points of the stars are images of crossed swords and guns (at top), and date: "Aug 13 - 16 1906".
