Corded corsets, the precursor to the iconic boned corsets of the later half of the 19th century, where essential for support and to achieve the fashionable silhouette in the 1820s and 30s.
This corset is made of a tan cotton twill with a subtle two-tone diagonal stripe. It is lined fully with rough white cotton. The edges are bound with brown twill tape. The corset has narrow, tapered shoulder straps as well as bust and hip gores. The corset is corded at the top of the bust gores, around the busk pocket, waist, back, and around the closure. It closes with 9 or 10 ( depending on side) offset bone eyelets at center back, accommodating for spiral lacing. There are applied channels, likely for boning, in the center back lining. The busk pocket has been altered to have different modes of inserting the busk.
Condition: Good. Fabric has torn in places but remains stable. OL 15 3/4" at center front; OL 14 3/8" at center back.
