This newspaper was found among a dozen Herald of Freedom newspapers in a desk drawer, along with a single issue of another competing paper, the Bridgeport Messenger.  Although the original owner of the group of newspapers is unknown, the presence of two other newspapers along with the Herald of Freedom papers suggest the owner was someone who paid close attention to the news, as P. T. Barnum, editor and publisher of the Herald of Freedom, would have done.  This newspaper is included in the P. T. Barnum Digital Collection because it is an example of the competition Barnum faced during the three year run of his weekly newspaper, which he published in Bethel, Conn.
