Textile and Personal Artifact
Ivory silk sash with faded pink rosebuds stitched to the end areas. It is believed to be Minnie Warren's bridesmaid sash worn at the wedding of her older sister, M. Lavinia Warren to Charles S. Stratton on February 10, 1863.  Like her sister and brother-in-law, she was also a little person.  Her bridesmaid attire is shown in photographs of the wedding party, the event famously known as the Fairy Wedding.  Rosebuds were a "theme" of her outfit, and thus the likelihood that this sash, worn around the waist with the long ends behind or arranged to one side, was part of her bridesmaid's gown.  The fabric rosebuds have not aged well, now appearing faded (probably a stronger pink originally) and somewhat crushed.

That wedding was held at Grace Episcopal Church in New York City. The wedding party included not only Charles and Lavinia tying the knot, but fellow Barnum performers and little people George Washington Morrison Nutt - known as "Commodore Nutt" - and Minnie Warren, Lavinia’s younger sister, as the best man and maid of honor.  The wedding was heavily promoted by P. T. Barnum, becoming a major social event on a scale with contemporary celebrity weddings.  Many souvenir products were created to commemorate the Fairy Wedding, especially carte de visites photographs, sheet music, and small trinkets.  Minnie Warren, whose proper name was Huldah Pierce Warren Bump, was born on June 2, 1849.  She later married Edmund Newell.  She died on July 23,1878, from complications after childbirth; sadly, her baby also died.  Minnie Warren Newell is buried in Middleboro, Massachusetts.
