Mark Twain

1931 (Date manufactured/created)
Painting
Canvas, metal, wood, paint
1931 oil on canvas portrait of Mark Twain by Charles C. Curran (1861-1942). Painting is a bust length portrait of Samuel L. Clemens, presumably seated and looking at the viewer. A note on the back of the painting indicates that the portrait was based off an photograph of Clemens taken by John Haley of Hartford, Connecticut. In the painting, Clemens is wearing a white suit jacket, vest, and shirt. His hair and mustache have turned white, suggesting older age.

The frame is carved and painted wood. The signature of Charles C. Currant and the date of 1931 are painted in the lower proper right corner of the canvas.
