Photograph of Jumbo the elephant after being hit by a train in St. Thomas, Canada in 1885. Jumbo is pictured lying on his left side on an embankment. There is a blurred image of his keeper standing behind Jumbo which is visible in other versions of this photograph (see MS-0027-625-007). In this copy the image of the keeper has been strengthened with pencil and the portion which was cropped out of the original has been drawn in.
There are multiple notations on the back. At the top is written "Property of Eddie F. Smith". Below that in pencil is the number "13". Next is the notation "Killed at St Thomas Canada 1885" and at lower left it says "Property of E. Fritz Smith 107 York Ave". Lastly across the right hand end is written "Jumbo was killed at Thomas Canada 1885".
