A letter from Laura Betts to her cousin Aurinda Betts. Laura discusses her trip from New York City to Newburgh for Christmas and her desire to come visit Aurinda in Wilton. The letter reads:

New York, January 13th 1822

My Dear Friend

Your last letter was received with much pleasure should have answered it sooner but have been taking a trip to Munroe in company with Mr. & Mrs. Johnson to keep the Holidays. Spent a week up in the mountains very pleasantly had fine sleighing which we took care to improve to advantage made an excursion to New Burgh to pay our respects to Cousin Sam and returned home much pleased with our jaunt. Altho it was a different route from what I intended for I had made up my mind that I would come to Wilton and keep Christmas but I found it would be so difficult to get back that it was advisable to postpone it until some more convenient opportunity – therefore I would not have you flatter yourself that you have escaped a troublesome visitor. I have nothing amusing to write you. Every thing goes on with u much as when you were hear so you can judge of the pleasing rarity I have to offer. Maria’s health is somewhat better & Abigail is going on with her studies rapidly expect she will soon get to the ornamental branches. You had better come down & join her think by Spring you might both of you come out on the bright side. I have spent one day at Lymans since they commenced house keeping they are very pleasantly situated. I had a peek at the dungeon but did not get in. Conclude I must have behaved better than common. Jane has had a letter from Eliza Betts she is much pleased with Baltimore and thinks that Frank’s wife improves much upon acquaintance I think it can’t be in the way of talking. Remember us all most affectionately to Lavinia we want to see you both very much hope you will come down in the Spring Miss Aurinda Betts
Yours Laura Betts
