Quilt, Sunshine Society of East River

1914 (Date manufactured/created)
Fabric (Cotton)
Quilt, 40 panel pin wheel design. Sewn by "Sunshine Society of East River", (written on lower edge of quilt with date) mounted on pole at top. Removed from East River Reading Room prior to its sale.
In 1874, the East River Reading Room on the Boston Post Road in Madison, CT opened and  served as a town library and meeting place.  It was supplanted by the Scranton Memorial Library in 1901.  In 1914 a sewing group called the Sunshine Society of East River met on Fridays to make clothing and toys for underprivileged children, using treadle sewing machines still in the room.

See the November 16,1987 'The Suburban News' article about it at www.hercc.org/HERCC pics/Historic photos/east river....
