Rug Hook

1840 – 1860 (Date manufactured/created)
Wood, Brass
Measurement Notes: 5 3/4'' L x 1/2'' W
Rug making is an art form where yarn is looped through a stiff woven base. The loops would be pulled through a base made of burlap, linen or rug backing through use of a crochet style metal hook and usually with a  wooden handle.
Rug hook with wooden handle painted black, round at end. Handle appears to be lacking a ferrule as paint is lacking and natural wood is showing. Metal shank and hook are gold colored and probably brass. Small piece of what appears to be masking tape is adhered to the handle, inscribed with the number "5".
Piece of paper with typewritten note reads, "5. 'Given to me by my mother; it had been her mother's who came from Nova Scotia. Hook part well over a 100 years old, handle uncertain'." On verso of note are three pieces of yellow and brittle masking tape.
