Rug making is an art form where yarn is looped through a stiff woven base. The loops would be pulled through a base made of burlap, linen or rug backing through use of a crochet style metal hook and usually with a wooden handle.
Handmade rug hook with silver toned shank and polished handle. According to information passed on through the donor, this was made from a jackknife handle and a nail. Scales (from the jackknife handle are possibly horn), each is fastened to the metal shank with three small nails.  Shank has faint impressions of lettering, now illegible. Handle shows signs of heavy use and ware.
Piece of paper with typewritten note reads, "3. 'Made from a jack knife handle and a nail. Well over 100 years old. Probably made by my father-in-law'." [Olive B Russell's father-in-law]
On verso of note are pieces of yellow, brittle masking tape.
