At the end of the Civil War, those families who had profited by the industrial revolution
began to show off their wealth. One of the most conspicuous ways was the acquisition of a
vacation home at the shore. The grander of these summer colonies were at Newport, Long Island
and various towns north of Boston, all ·the way to Mt. Desert Island, Maine, but there were many
others of lesser grandeur elsewhere and one of them was at Madison.
