The spike was made from the sprue on the second golden spike that was driven into the railroad as the final spike in the transcontinental railroad on May 10 1869. Seven miniature spikes were made and given out to dignitaries related to the company and the head of the transcontinental railroad. This one was given to William Ogden, the first mayor of Chicago and proponent of the transcontinental railroad.
