Ax, Mortising

Ax head

circa 1750 (Date manufactured/created)
9 in H X 3.5 in W
There are many types of axes, used for specific purposes.  A mortising axe, such as this one, was used to create morises, or a hole, in which a tenon will be inserted, creating a strong joint.  The mortising axe is used like a chisel, which can be struck with a mallet to remove the wood to create the mortise.

This mortise axe head was found buried near the Eric Sloane Museum during construction.  It is mounted to illustrate an intact mortise axe.
