Adz, Carpenter's

circa 1720 (Date manufactured/created)
An adze or adz is an versatile cutting tool similar to an axe but wit ha cutting edge perpendicular to the handle rather than parallel.  Adzes have been used since the Stone Age, and are used primarily for smoothing or carving wood in hand woodworking (a hand adze), and as a hoe for agriculture ( a foot adze).

This adze, which is similar to one in Eric Sloane's Museum of Early American Tools is listed as a 1720 Connectiut Hand Adze.  An iron strap and wedge enabled the blade to be removed for sharpening and storage.
