1860 – 1870 (Earliest/Latest dates)
Salted paper portrait of an unidentified woman, probably belonging to the Mills or Phelps family. The subject is young, probably late teens or early twenties. She sits in a mahogany chair with floral cravings on the crest and an upholstered back of floral fabric. The woman is turned slightly in the chair so that her right side is more visible than her left. However, she has turned her face to look into the camera. She wears a flowing jacket or cloak, probably wool, with braided trim around the top edge of the garment. A heavy tassel hangs down from the trim on the sitter's right arm. There is a large jeweled pin at the sitter's collar.

The photograph is oval shaped. The walnut frame and mat have been removed in order to preserve the photograph: see Notes
