Framed watercolor painting of John Bissell House in East (now South) Windsor, Connecticut by Barbara van Winkelen. Wintry view of house and back buildings on edge of river. Sign on lawn reads " Bissell Ferry Landing, American Bicentennial 1776-1976." 3/8" metal frame with gold mat and white inner mat.
Artist's statement on back of painting reads: "Bicentennial Series #28. Built in 1658 or 59 by John Bissell - Pioneer of the East Windsor emigration from Windsor. Ferry across the Great River (Connecticut ) granted to Bissell Family in 1648-9. Podunks and Scantic Indians lived on the East side of River. First -- and for several yrs. the only dwelling-house in East Windsor. Probable that John Bissell, Senior, moved over in 1662 as it was in that yr. that he made over his former residence on the West Side over to son John Jr. Garrisoned in 1675 for King Philip's War. All others were moved back to Windsor and the Palisade for safety.
