"Within the Palisado" - Research on some of the original 1640 Windsor land grants.

1990 – 2004 (Date manufactured/created)
1990 – 2004 (Earliest/Latest dates)
Informational notes and records pertaining to some of the original 1640 land grants within the Palisado.

This research was initiated by the donor to ascertain the name of the builder of the house standing on Walter Fyler's original lot. The Windsor Historical Society purchased this home in 1925 and opened it as a museum, calling it the Lt. Walter Fyler Homestead. The date of the house was questioned, and this research has provided the information needed to rename it the c.1758 John and Sarah Strong House. As this property was sold and divided, it became necessary to expand the search to the Fyler and Strong families and the donor/researcher ended up with notes on other neighboring properties and owners in the southern portion of the palisado.

Copies of land records, probate records, maps, and genealogical information make up the bulk of the material. Also included are the reports from consultants who provided the architectural surveys and conservation assessment on the Fyler/Strong house and minutes and notes from the work of the Reinterpretation Team. A compilation of all references to the Fyler House from the Society's annual reports entitled "A Diary of the Lt. Walter Fyler House" covers the period 1925-1997.

[The donor's previous work on the Chaffee House property (Sgt. Thomas Staires' land grant) and adjoining properties (the southeastern portion of the palisado) will be part of this collection. It is organized in the same fashion. As of Feb. 2005 these records are partly in the Chaffee House, 108 Palisado Ave. file, and partly at the donor's home.]

The donor states that "these records are not to be considered complete. The old records are hard to translate, have many gaps and some speculation must be used. They are merely all the information I did succeed in finding and perhaps the gaps will fill in. It seemed a shame to have all this information just end up as a pile of papers, thus this file "Within the Palisado" was started, to pull out the pertinent facts for future use."

Note: Bev is still organizing the papers and will bring them into the library as soon as she is finished. Fyler/Strong House papers received Feb. 1, 2005.
