Oil on wood
4in H X 3in W
This small oil on wood painting shows a man, from the torso up, hunched over reading a book. The man wears a dark red robe. He is older with short gray hair and a long gray beard with a mustache. The beard appears to be blowing to the left, as if the gentleman had just sat down in a hurry or with enthusiasm to read creating a gust of wind. His hair, however, is combed in the opposite direction of the blowing beard. The man, set against a dark background, is engrossed in the book he is reading. The painter's technique created a very soft, smooth and blended image. The painting is recessed in an ornate guilded frame with a dart motiff immediately bordering the image and a foliate motiff raised up in the middle portion of the frame. The picture is held in place by two 2.5" blocks of wood horizontally on the top and bottom. Four 1-1.25" vertical blocks, two on each side, also support the painting.
