Evening Star Quilt

1850 – 1860 (Earliest/Latest dates)
Cotton
Quilt: Eight-Point Star, "Evening Star" pattern. Hand quilted, pieced quilt with seven stitches per inch. The design follows a star design but does not actually outline the piece. Cotton fabrics with off-white blocks with muted browns, red-browns & Prussian blue. Excellent examples of the "madder-style" prints of the mid-19th century, also popular tan-brown and Prussian blue combination prints. Solid (red and off-white) and multi-colored pieces. Roller prints; Turkey red prints used in the corner blocks. Thin cotton batting with a heavy, off-white cotton backing. Sashing with border.

The data in this record comes from a survey by Adrienne Saint-Pierre of 137 Poverty Hollow Road, Redding, Connecticut in 1995. Adrienne's final evaluation states: "A superb quilt! Excellent condition, quality of workmanship and design. Really good example of period fabrics, ranging from all the madder prints to the orange of the mid 19th century (California Gold) to the tan-brown and Prussian blue prints and a bit of Turkey red."
