Mrs. Chas. Elder Account Book, Poquonock, Conn.

1896 – 1927 (Earliest/Latest dates)
Book of household accounts kept by Mrs. Charles Elder of Poquonock, CT. The volume contains records kept in two hands, presumably by Catharine (Kate) Hammann Elder, the first wife of Charles Elder, Sr., and Clara Daniels Elder, his third wife. Kate's records include payments for music and dancing lessons and for the girl who did housework. These entries are all dated 1896 and 1897. Kate died Nov. 4, 1897; two additional pages contain a list of twelve women who were entitled to part of her personal possessions and the itemized articles of clothing which were distributed. Many of the women lived in Poquonock.
The entries written in a heavier hand are dated between 1917 and 1927. They consist of lists of names of family members and others and gifts or household articles purchased for them.
Several newspaper obituaries are pasted in at the back of the volume including ones for Conrad Meyers who died May 14, 1898 in New York City; Lizzie Quick (Mrs. Edwin R.) of Port Jervis, NY, a daughter of Harry and Fanny (Elder) Cooke, Sr.; and John Elder (1806-1898) of Poquonock, pattern maker at the Tunxis Mill and father of Charles Elder, Sr.
