Red Zigzag Quilt

1915 – 1920 (Earliest/Latest dates)
Cotton
77in W 85.5in L
Strip quilt made of scrap fabrics. Possibly a Roman Stripe pattern. Overall color scheme is a red "zigzag" with multicolor prints. Diamond grid.
Quilted: pieced. Machine-sewn construction with hand quilting (8 stitches per inch)
Straight applied binding. Filler-probably cotton.

Backing: Cotton print, small brown-black floral on red ground. Fabrics include roller prints and discharge prints

Quite a broad time range on these textiles perhaps many were taken from the marker's grandmothers or great-grandmothers? Many definitely third quarter of the 19th century, many reflect the first quarter of the 20th century.

The data in this record comes from a survey by Adrienne Saint-Pierre of 137 Poverty Hollow Road, Redding, Connecticut in 1995. Adrienne's final evaluation states: "Good, but not outstanding quilt, though certainly a useful "album" of cotton prints from various periods. Difficult to date the construction of the quilt- could have been assembled in the 1930s from blocks that were made a decade or more earlier. Appears to have had minimal use even though its design suggests a "utility" quilt."
