Rectangular document box; front, back and side panels of riven oak. Lid and bottom of pine. Front carved with meandering tulips and vines; ground of flat carving filled with punch marks. Front corners have serrated edges created by chip-carving. Scribelines are visible on the front panel on either side of the carved field. Front panel joined with rabbet joints to the sides and nailed with four evenly spaced rosehead nails on the right and left sides. There are horizontal worm holes on the left side of the front panel. The back panel is nailed to the sides in the same manner as the front panel, although a modern screw at the top of each side also secures the back panel to the side panels. The pine bottom has chamfered edges and wormholes on these edges. The pine lid also has chamfered edges and is attached to the body of hte box with iron cotter pin hinges. There are two dark stains on the right side of the lid, as well as a series of apparent burn marks along the front edge of the lid. THere is a thumbnail molded edge along the front and sides of the box's lid. An iron escutcheon is attached to the front panel with rosehead nails. The lock is missing. The interior of the front panel reveals the carved out section for the missing lock. The hasp remains attached to the lid.

Traces of red and yellow paint remain on the carved front panel. The pine cleats on the underside of the lid appear to be original; old rosehead nails attach the cleats to the lid.

The letter A is carved into the right side of the lid. A small square notch is carved out of the interior rear panel on the upper right side, and there is a scribe line running from the left side of the notch to the base of the panel. This looks like a miscarved joint, but every box in this group has the same notch.
